Abstract :
In response to the growing recognition that creative thinking and problem solving are crucial 21st century workplace skills, Sheridan College engaged in a strategic plan aimed at becoming a creative campus. With this goal in mind, Sheridan engaged faculty and staff in a professional development program founded on Creative Problem Solving (CPS). The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess the degree to which participation in a three-day CPS workshop positively impacted participants’ views of their work environment. To assess employees’ perceptions of the work environment, the Organizational Growth Indicator (OGI), was originally administered in 2013 and then again in 2015, after the creativity training was introduced. Comparisons of the OGI for 2013 and 2015 showed non-significant changes in perceptions of the work environment overall; however, analysis of the 2015 results showed that CPS training participants had significantly more positive views of the work environment on six of eight OGI orientation scales and one of four OGI mindsets. In the case of the OGI mindsets, those who went through training perceived a work environment that was more open to new thinking and experimentation. Interpretations of the impact of CPS training on the work environment, and implications, are discussed, along with the inherent limitations associated with conducting a research study as part of an organizational change initiative.
